Colonic Hydrotherapy in Petersfield, Hampshire

A - Z Health, Park Court, Petersfield. Claire Harris, over 25 years clinical practice.

What is Colonic Hydrotherapy?

Colonic hydrotherapy is a gentle, effective treatment designed to support the natural cleansing of the colon, helping to relieve bloating, constipation and digestive discomfort. The treatment uses water to encourage the release of accumulated waste and gas, supporting the body's own elimination process. The liver, colon, bowel, skin, lungs and reproductive organs are all areas of elimination. Supporting the colon has a wider effect on whole-body health.

What to Expect

The treatment itself takes approximately 45 to 50 minutes. Most clients do not experience significant discomfort. The most common sensation is the feeling of needing to go to the toilet, as the water triggers muscular activity and gas and stool are released.

If you are carrying a lot of trapped gas or are heavily bloated, you may experience some cramping or abdominal discomfort during the session. Clients also commonly feel a brief goosebump response or a momentary sensation similar to diarrhoea. Almost every client who has been through it says it was not as bad as they had expected.

Preparation and Aftercare

Before Your Appointment

Avoid Why
Red meat and heavy proteins Slow to digest, makes treatment less comfortable
Alcohol (24 hrs before) Dehydrates and stresses the gut
Fizzy drinks and chewing gum Introduce gas into the digestive tract
Processed or fried foods Slow digestion and add to bowel load
Raw vegetables and pulses Can cause gas, cooked vegetables are fine
Eating within 2 hours of your session Leave your stomach as empty as possible

Do drink plenty of water in the 24 to 48 hours before your appointment.

After Your Appointment

What you may notice What it means
Delayed bowel movement (2 to 3 days) Normal. The bowel resets after treatment.
Mild headache or fatigue Normal response. Drink plenty of water.
Temporary bloating or gas Settles within a few hours as everything moves.
Increased energy and clarity Common from the 2nd or 3rd session onwards.
Feeling lighter overall The most common feedback after a first session.

Eat lightly after treatment: soups, steamed vegetables and rice. Avoid alcohol for 24 hours. Claire will provide written aftercare guidance after your first session.

Arvigo Abdominal Massage

Claire also offers Arvigo Abdominal Massage, which can be performed during the same appointment as Colon Hydrotherapy. The Arvigo Technique is a non-invasive, external massage of the abdomen developed by Dr Rosita Arvigo, a naprapathic physician, working with the digestive, reproductive and urinary systems to improve circulation, release tension and support organ function.

Claire has 18 years of training in Arvigo, deep tissue and visceral bodywork. Clients with digestive, pelvic or reproductive concerns often choose to combine Arvigo with Colon Hydrotherapy in a single session.

If you would like to include Arvigo Massage in your appointment, mention this when booking and Claire will allow additional time.

How Many Sessions?

Between 4 and 6 sessions are typically recommended, with 6 sessions considered ideal to support the body appropriately. Sessions are usually spaced one to four weeks apart, depending on how quickly you want to progress.

For clients with constipation or a sluggish bowel, rehabilitation of the colon muscles and nerve fibres takes longer. In these cases, 6 to 8 sessions are recommended, with gaps between sessions of no more than two weeks.

Maintenance

Once your initial course is complete, many clients return seasonally, typically every three to four months, to maintain bowel health and digestive function. Claire will advise on a maintenance schedule suited to your individual needs at the end of your course.

People are often nervous before their first session. By the end, the most common thing I hear is that it was nothing like they expected, and that they feel so much better. The experience is calm, private, and entirely led by you.
